Q

What are the different NAS solutions

What is the difference between NAS solutions from major NAS vendors like NetApp and SAMBA-based NAS solutions? What are performance advantages of NetApp solutions when compared with custom built NAS solutions using SAMBA? SAMBA is freeware from Australia to implement the CIFS protocol on UNIX systems. It seems to be a good implementation as a way to provide remote file serving for Windows servers. NAS systems such as those from NetApp...

implement the CIFS protocol with their own software.

It's really a matter of effectiveness and support. NetApp has a paid engineering staff to do the development and support and work on the competitiveness to make it a good solution. That should give an indication -- competition in the marketplace is good for the customer.
