Using NAS gateways in front of a new SAN

Let's say I plan to go with two NAS heads and a new SAN. Am I better off virtualizing SAN space for use with the NAS heads or utilizing attached storage instead?

If you are using NAS gateways in front of a new SAN, you need to have a larger strategy for deciding on a virtualized storage environment.

The NAS gateways will work in either environment. Since you are doing a new SAN implementation, you should consider the virtualized environment with one of the solutions that are available today. There are several available now and some have been on the market for a few years so there is very good reference information available.

These solutions will have good economic value in consolidation, utilization and administrative costs. The largest values come from administrative costs and time to deployment for storage on demand.
