Q

Tiered storage options

A reader asks: "If you use a combination of Fibre Channel (FC) and FATA drives is the configuration one tier?"

If you use a combination of Fibre Channel (FC) and FATA drives is the configuration one tier? Or, with combination of FC and SATA drives, could I have FC on one tier for production and SATA on another for snapshot or mirroring?
The answer to your question would depend on the software you are using to run the system. There are products that would let you specify which hardware you would put particular files on within a single file system. Otherwise, you'd probably want to use HSM software to migrate files from one tier to the other as they age.
