I don't know of any reasons why this would not work. At a communications and functional level, everything is standard. Compatibility should not be a concern. The only hiccup that could occur is if the alpha system uses a proprietary storage protocol for any special functions such as clustered storage.
There was a question some time ago about cross vendor compatibility regarding an alpha system. My answer was pretty much the same then and I never heard back that my answer was wrong.
