Are companies offering storage-provisioning software? Is it safe to trust automating this?

Check out the products from Invio Software, InterSAN and CreekPath Also, take a look at Netreon's SANDesigner that does not necessarily provision but is a stellar planning tool.

As to their safety -- I expect them to be like most automation products, which is to say they are a lot safer than the "protein robots" who use them.
