Without using mode conditioners, converters or a switch, you will not be able to connect single mode fiber (SMF) to multi-mode fiber (MMF). To address the second part of your question, there would be an impact on signal noise. When dealing with fiber optics, this is called decibel loss (dB loss). You will encounter dB loss when ever you introduce a cable connection, piece of equipment and over distances in general, depending on type of cable being used.
