SAN and NAS (heads), together at last

I have recently heard of a solution that has a large SAN in place but is still making use of "NAS heads" in part of the solution as well. Are you familiar with this?

Very, and it's a popular solution that is typically used to consolidate file servers into a centrally administered environment. Using a NAS gateway (sometimes called a NAS head) is a great way to leverage the current SAN and resource share the block there. Most of the major storage vendors have gateway offerings, which reflects this solution's popularity.
