Programmatically determining the device path

Is it possible to programmatically determine what the device path of a device in a SAN is for a host? Is it possible to definitely say that a tape device in a SAN is /dev/rmt0 on a host and if not, why not? Is this possible when the device is directly connected to the system?

Yes, you can determine the device path for a device in a SAN exactly the same way that you do with direct attached devices on a SCSI bus. The SCSI driver level for the FC HBA takes care of this transparently.

For most tape devices -- they will be behind some kind of FC/SCSI router or bridge. Changes to the SAN configuration can screw this up, just as changes to the SCSI bus will screw things up.
