Is it typical, when using a network attached storage (NAS) appliance, that a host/server would have 2xNICs installed? One connected to the standard LAN and another connected to an Ethernet switch for IP SAN access?
It is very common to have a NIC for the standard LAN and another for storage -- whether it is for file access to a NAS device using NFS or CIFS or for block access using iSCSI. A single NIC could be used for both, but for performance reasons a separate segment or network is used in many cases.
