There aren't any recommended or standard tools for users primarily because all the different operating systems, even different versions of the same operating system, record information differently and therefore not able to be correlated. Win 2k has the most complete set of performance information and if you're using that, you can get some valuable data from PERFMON. Unfortunately, in heterogeneous environments, you'll just have to come up with your own set of metrics right now.
