Is NAS a good option for a GroupWise messaging? What backup options do you recommend?

There is nothing specifically stated by Novell against using a NAS device for GroupWise messaging and the installation instructions do give directions for use of a file server (remember, NAS is a fancy acronym for file serving). I don't have first hand experience with using NAS for GroupWise but I don't see where there should be a problem. I would recommend you send a query directly to Novell and get their official position.

Backup is another issue. I recommend using a standard backup product from one of the vendors that is well established and then conduct periodic restore tests to ensure integrity of the backup. Some NAS devices utilize NDMP that can provide improved control for the backup. The mechanics of the backup can be a very big deal depending on your environment. A backup to a SAN attached tape library is optimal but even a direct attached tape may be preferable to tying up your network. Again, this is very situation dependent.
