Functionality and NAS offerings

Is there software out there that adds functionality to NAS offerings so that the space becomes more commoditized? NTAP seems to have superior software but I am wondering whether other players are closing the gap.

The short answer is no. Each NAS vendor has some type of software offerings that are meant to help distinguish them from the competition. There's not really any third party software that "homogenizes" the feature set for NAS offerings. In addition, there are no standards for how the features are implemented by the different vendors - they all work differently.
