There are solutions now where the device allows both file (with NAS) and block (with FC or iSCSI) access. Several vendors provide them but I think Network Appliance was probably the biggest name vendor to come out with a solution early. You can look on their web site for the FAS (Fibre Attached Storage) products to get a general description of how this works.
