Why didn't ESCON and HIPPI become the preferred standards for transport between host and host and host and peripherals? Why has Fibre Channel emerged past these technologies? Why do we need Fibre Channel if we have Gigabit Ethernet? Is it an interface issue? Could we build a USB to Fiber Interface?

ESCON is proprietary, HIPPI is half duplex. FC is not necessary - some day it could be all GbE or maybe FC will prevail for storage. FC is pretty reliable and robust - it works well.

Don't hold your breath waiting for a USB/FC connect. USB is not designed for the data rates of storage networking.
