Cross-country WAN security
A database containing genealogical data will be updated and stored from a primary gateway server and from there will be configured for cross-country WAN connections through two other locations. What is the best way to maintain security of data in this situation?

The question is not exactly clear to me. I assume you have a DB that is updated in one place but has connections through two locations for cross-country.

First of all, I would suggest installing VPNs for the connections over the WAN. This will protect the traffic over the WANs. Secondly, you want to determine how sensitive the information is. If it is not very critical, you may simply impose access restrictions, integrity checks etc. and leave the data cleartext. If it is very critical, you may want to consider encrypting the data while in store.
