A tool showing uptime

Hi Evan,

What is your recommendation for a tool that will monitor servers and produce a graph and report showing uptime by server and by month? Management is asking for this information.

I have not seen many tools for doing this sort of thing. I know that a lot of people write their own or do it through manual monitoring (keeping a diary in Excel, for example). A Web search reveals a package called Cricket, which looks promising, although I have never used it myself. It appears to have been designed for monitoring Web traffic, but it looks quite flexible and there are many add-in packages available.

Some information about Cricket and some add-in packages are at: http://www.certaintysolutions.com/tech-advice/cricket-contrib/. At least one of the add-in packages appears to monitor uptime.

You can download the basic package from Cricket.

Hope this helps.

Editor's note: There are a variety of tools that offer some form of uptime (or downtime) checking. One you might want to look at is Backup Report by Bellevue, Wash,-based Bocada. Many of the main storage vendors also offer some form of uptime/downtime checking.
