Leveraging Xiotech's DataScale Shadow-Copy Provider in Windows 2003
Sponsored by: Xiotech Corporation
This white paper reviews limitations of most backup solutions; specifically how open files cannot be backed up and point-in-time copy operation. These issues result in incomplete backups and downtime every time you perform a backup. In the vast majority of IT organizations, this downtime is unacceptable.
This downtime can be avoided by implementing transparent backup and disaster recovery protection without disruption. Xiotech Corporation's Magnitude 3D clustered storage system with its DataScale™ SP software integrates seamlessly with Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). With this innovative technology, you can now perform complete, online backups-including open files – and time while end users continue working" |

Dell/EMC AX100 Entry SAN Solution Addresses SME Demands
Sponsored by: Dell Computer Corporation
This analyst white paper reviews a new SAN offering from Dell and EMC that addresses the data storage needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. This AX100 SAN solution is designed ideally for SME requirements and targets companies without existing SAN installations – although the AX100 array also appeals to large enterprise customers as a cost-effective direct-attached or near-line storage device. The solution is offered through a customer-installable package that includes all of the components of a SAN infrastructure, including storage array, switch, host adapter, and software stack.
The cost advantage of the solution is driven by three critical factors:
- AX100 employs the cost-effective Serial ATA (SATA) storage
- The bundled software provides significant savings to customers compared to the hefty software licensing prices regulated by other vendors
- The solution leverages Dell's pricing advantage to offer rock-bottom component pricing

WHITE PAPER:
Deploy Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager in an iSCSI SAN
Sponsored by: EqualLogic, Inc.
This Technical Report describes the benefits of using SAN storage with Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 (DPM), a server software application that provides near-continuous data protection and optimizes disk-based backup and recovery operations. Intelligent PS Series storage arrays provide fast setup, automated management, easy scalability, multipath I/O support, SAN boot support, and remote volume replication. This makes a PS Series group an iSCSI SAN consisting of one or more arrays connected to an IP network an excellent choice for the storage pool resources used in DPM configurations. Not only does a PS Series SAN improve storage utilization efficiency and availability, it also delivers flexibility and ease-of-management regardless of SAN scale. |

WHITE PAPER:
Introduction to Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006
Sponsored by: Microsoft
This white paper describes the challenges with the current data protection model. Because the current model is optimized for backup, not recovery, the recovery of individual application objects is often expensive, time consuming and often times unreliable. Storage IT professionals are being held to higher service level agreements, lower thresholds for data loss, and faster data recovery requirements; all while trying to find time to run a backup.
What's the solution? Disk storage provides customers a much more rapid and reliable way to handle recoveries, while providing a solution to the shrinking backup window. However, using existing tape software to write to disk reduces the problem of the physical unreliability of tape, but it does not optimize recovery because the backups are usually saved in the format of the tape vendor. Microsoft has created a new back up solution software, Data Protection Manager, whose goal is to provide efficient data protection and rapid reliable recovery at a lower total cost of ownership. |

WHITE PAPER:
Simplifying Exchange 2003 Deployment & Management in an EMC SAN
Sponsored by: EMC Corporation
SANs offered a big leap forward in deploying, scaling and protecting information storage for critical applications like Exchange. By deploying Exchange in a SAN environment and consolidating storage, companies can increase their resource utilization, simplify backup and recovery operations, and lower their cost of operations.
Managing Exchange in a SAN environment differs from how an Exchange administrator in an SMB today is accustomed to operating. This can create a hurdle for those who aren't ready to acquire the expertise to implement and manage a SAN environment.
In response, EMC has introduced Storage Administrator for Exchange. EMC Storage Administrator for Exchange offers:
- Simple movement of Exchange data from current deployment to a SAN
- Accelerated migration from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003
- Exchange management tool to automate SAN storage provisioning
- Resuming email operations on an alternative Exchange server without clustering

Simplify Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Storage with a Clustered iSCSI SAN
Sponsored by: LeftHand Networks
This white paper explores some of the new ways Microsoft Exchange administrators are using iSCSI SANs to efficiently resolve their most critical storage issues with Microsoft Exchange management, and in particular why a clustered iSCSI SAN offers scalability and reliability benefits critical to an Exchange environment. The result is a simpler, cleaner management experience, better server uptime statistics, and integration with advanced Exchange backup and recovery functionality that allows administrators to back up and restore individual mailboxes, items from within a mailbox, or specific Exchange database stores, in a fraction of the time it used to take with more common disk- or tape-based backup methods. |

WHITE PAPER:
Simplify SAN Adoption Through End-to-End Management
Sponsored by: QLogic Corp. Historically, Fibre Channel-based SANs have been very costly and complex to implement. This has been especially true with SMBs running Windows Server environments. The problem for these sites has been equating Windows' ease-of-use with financial decisions to operate a minimal IT staff. As a result, demystifying SAN constructs and simplifying installation are key goals of major storage vendors. At the vanguard of this SAN simplification movement has been QLogic with its wizard-based SANsurfer Express, a software package designed to simplify configuration and on-going management of its Fibre Channel switches, HBAs as well as heterogeneous storage. |
