Here are the seven finalists in the backup and disaster recovery software and services category in Storage magazine’s and SearchStorage.com’s 2011 Products of the Year competition. The category covers backup and recovery software, cloud backup and recovery services, disaster recovery (DR), snapshot and replication, electronic vaulting and archivers. Finalists are listed alphabetically.
Asigra Inc. Cloud Backup v11
Asigra Cloud Backup Version 11 is a cloud backup product designed to protect storage, servers, desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Asigra Cloud Backup Version 11 supports 10 Gbps local-area network (LAN) interfaces on storage and server infrastructure, while internal processes have been improved for faster data read/writes with multithreaded data deduplication, parallel processing for read I/O and data throughput, multiple overlapped I/O and delta differencing.
Druva inSync 4.1 Enterprise
Druva inSync Enterprise provides laptop backup, a segment of the data protection market that many analysts agree is underserved. Upgrades to this version include secure access to backup data with multiple restore points from Druva’s client application, Web browser or mobile devices; a server-side selective in-memory dedupe subsystem; and Active Directory integration. Druva claims inSync can now handle up to 200 parallel backups.
FalconStor Software Inc. Continuous Data Protector (CDP) with RecoverTrac Version 7
FalconStor Continuous Data Protector with RecoverTrac is designed to be a unified backup and disaster recovery product that can recover email, files, applications and entire systems locally and remotely. FalconStor reps say RecoverTrac can automatically restore applications in a specific order to ensure data integrity. The company also added high-availability failover and support for VMware Inc.’s Site Recovery Manager and VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI).
StorageCraft Technology Corp. ShadowProtect Virtual
StorageCraft ShadowProtect Virtual backs up Windows systems and can recover to a virtual machine, physical hardware or the cloud. New to this version: backup for virtual and physical environments, including support for Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V, Oracle VirtualBox and VMware; the ability to boot a backup of a virtual machine directly for fast access to data without performing a restore; and a new centralized management console.
Symantec Corp. Enterprise Vault 10
Version 10 of Symantec Enterprise Vault, an archiving platform, offers a variety of additions and upgrades, such as more granular control over identification, retention and deletion of Exchange messages; custodian-based search; and the ability to extend compliance policies to sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, preserving social media communications for e-discovery. Version 10 also supports Nirvanix cloud storage as an archiving tier.
Symantec NetBackup 7.1
Symantec NetBackup 7.1’s new features include the ability to discover and protect new or moved virtual machines without changing backup policies, fast restore of single files and folders from a VMDK of a Linux-based system, integration of NetBackup RealTime with VMware vCenter, and deduplication across physical and virtual environments.
VMware Inc. vCenter Site Recovery Manager 5
Site Recovery Manager is a disaster recovery solution for vSphere. Version 5 offers a number of new features, such as hypervisor-based replication. Site Recovery Manager 5 can also automatically move virtual servers back to a primary site after a failover, and it coordinates operations across both storage and vSphere layers.
