
Here are the 10 finalists in the backup and disaster recovery (DR) software and services category in Storage magazine's and SearchStorage.com's 2010 Products of the Year competition. The category covers backup, recovery, DR, snapshot, replication, electronic vaulting and archivers. Finalists are listed alphabetically.
Asigra Inc. Cloud Backup v10
Asigra has been around long enough to be considered a pioneer of cloud backup. Its latest product,
Asigra Cloud Backup v10, adds mobile device support, tiered
recovery and can be deployed as a virtual appliance. The Asigra software is used by both service
providers and enterprises.
Bocada Inc. Prism
Bocada helped created the data protection management market, and with Bocada Prism the company has
incorporated user feedback to give its software a thorough renovation. New modules include a health
check application, problem management and policy management. New features for managing
service-level agreements (SLAs) and chargeback have also been incorporated.
CA ARCserve D2D r15
CA ARCserve
D2D r15 is a new addition to CA's flagship ARCserve data protection product line. Among its
features are block-level incremental backups, snapshot support and bare-metal recovery among
dissimilar servers.
CommVault Systems Inc. Simpana 9
CommVault is back again, this time with Simpana
9, the newest edition of it data protection and management suite. Highlights of this version
include the addition of source data deduplication and hardware snapshot management.
Copiun Inc. Data Manager 2.0
Managing data on end-point devices has been a problem in enterprises for years, and Copiun hopes
its Copiun Data Manager 2.0 will finally provide
some relief. The product not only protects the data on laptops and other mobile devices, but offers
global deduplication of the backup data. End users shouldn't notice the modest agent running on
their devices, and they can use full-text searches to find and restore lost files.
StorageCraft Technology Corp. StorageCraft ShadowProtect 4.0
StorageCraft's data protection products have been popular among small- and medium-sized companies
who need ease of use without sacrificing functionality. StorageCraft ShadowProtect 4.0
adds features such as head start restore, which accelerates the restore process, replication and
centralized management of all instances of ShadowProtect.
Symantec Corp. Backup Exec 2010
The venerable backup application for small- and medium-sized businesses, Symantec Backup
Exec 2010 adds a bevy of new features, including integrated data deduplication, granular
recoveries in Microsoft virtualized environments and new archiving options.
Symantec Corp. NetBackup 7
One of the top backup applications for enterprises, Symantec
NetBackup 7 includes new features such as integrated deduplication; improved virtual machine
protection; replication technology that slims down data and allows for central management of data
copies; and centralized reporting that provides a view of Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec,
third-party backup apps and Symantec's Enterprise Vault archiving system.
TwinStrata Inc. CloudArray
Typically thought of as a data protection appliance, the TwinStrata CloudArray is now also available as
software so it can be run as a virtual appliance under Citrix, Microsoft or VMware hypervisors.
CloudArray links backups to cloud storage services, including AT&T Synaptic, Amazon and
services based on EMC Atmos.
Veeam Software Backup & Replication 5.0
Many users struggling with backing up virtual servers have turned to Veeam Backup & Replication
5.0, a data protection product built from the ground up to handle virtualized server
environments. Among its many new features are vPower, which lets you run a virtual machine from a
compressed and deduplicated backup, instant VM recovery and recovery verification.
